As quoted from the linked post.

It looks like you’re part of one of our experiments. The logged-in mobile web experience is currently unavailable for a portion of users. To access the site you can log on via desktop, the mobile apps, or wait for the experiment to conclude.

This is separate from the API issue. This will actually BLOCK you from even viewing reddit on your phone without using the official app.

It’s unbelievable how’s user hostile all of these major site have become. I deleted my 11 year old Reddit account today and while it hurt a little it’s important that we send a message and not use Reddit at least until they repeal this bullshit.

Same! I deleted my 10 year account. Kinda not even sad. It was going downhill for a while now. But hey I just created my own instance for gardeners called thegarden.land so now I have a new home to grow roots and thrive!

I’m pretty sure I’m going to delete my three year and ten year accounts and just walk away for good. Honestly I was a little sad all day today, because I have a few hobbies I’m really crazy about and the cooking, baking, gemstone, and gardening communities have felt like home for a long time…but just using lemmy for a tiny little bit, I’m actually really excited! I’m having a much simpler experience here that’s refreshing. I like the content I’m reading.

Hey from the Garden! We had to restart the site last night. Having some difficulties getting off the ground. I think we lost all our users! Were you one of them? Could I ask you to try there again and tell me if things are working okay, if you still are logged in, etc ? I Appreciate the help. Thegarden.land

They’re not gonna repeal anything. The only thing that will stop this is by Reddit dying and becoming a part of web history, which is hopefully on its way to happening.

Pretty disappointing to see something I’ve spent so much time with go down the tubes like this. I know that for a lot of people, Reddit has been dying for years, but I’ve stuck to old.reddit and my Android apps, and haven’t looked at /r/all in a long, long time. I unsubscribed from all of the big/default subreddits, and just hang out in my happy subs where people (mostly) are people and aren’t lunatics, and it’s still been a nice place.

Killing the mobile apps is pretty much the last straw for me. I’m sure I’ll still click on search results from Reddit sometimes, but I won’t be logged in anymore and it will only be on a browser with ad-blocking and privacy features. There is no way I’m downloading their app.

If they were to go this route for all users, I would simply never use Reddit again on my phone. And yes, I’m in the minority, and yes, I know they don’t care about losing me, but man, what a bummer.

If you work really hard to gain the attention of your overlords and remain loyal for years, eventually you will be granted nothing anyways and just get shit on in the end regardless! That being said, this feels like reddit tripling down. It’s ridiculous

I want to leave Reddit completely so bad. They’re ruining such a good thing, I was a member for 13 years. I hope Lemmy kinda just naturally replaces it for me but I’m sure there’s some stuff that’s just the best to go to Reddit for, I hope that changes slowly and people start using Lemmy or something else. But hey im here and it feels pretty good. Feels kinda like when I found Reddit for the first time all those years ago. Hello everyone :)

Yikes this is so insane. I’m so sick of the ads and spyware laden apps. Once you look into that abyss it’s hard to unsee it. It’s uncomfortable to have every aspect of you monetized and viewed. It’s unnatural man. I just started hardening my internet and device use this year.

Honestly, mobile browing (even using old.reddit) has been garbage for years because they detect your mobile OS and constantly try to push their app on you. Click on link, do you want to open in mobile app? let me open the playstore for you. And then you also get limited comments. To see more comments open in mobile app… You could do a case study in how to alienate your customers into leaving your platform on just mobile browsing reddit.

I’ve never experienced the limited comments but it does constantly send an intrusive popup at the bottom of the screen that forces me to respond if I want to continue on my browser or go to download the app.

Also I have to switch to desktop mode to access certain features such as uploading a picture or a video when creating a new post. The Reddit mobile site only lets you make text or link posts.

All of this functionality could easily be added to the mobile site but it’s clear they’re hobbling the mobile site to annoy people into downloading the official Reddit app where they will have greater access to your personal data.

Yeah, it’s refreshing to see how quickly Lemmy is able to load. I used to just barely load the reddit mobile site and launch in infinity, but now I’m gonna do my scrolling on Lemmy. I’m sure it will be healthier without so much doom. Watching so many social medias burn is kinda entertaining.

Paraphrasing several controversial, shortsighted reddit comments yesterday: ‘I use the browser, why can’t everyone else? Reddit will still be here and you’ll be back, crybabies!’

I was on the leading edge of the Digg exodus and Reddit is there now.

I use the browser, why can’t everyone else?

Because reddit ended support for the old, usable mobile page. The one that ends in .compact. Because I don’t always have a stable internet connection and the new mobile page is as stable as a pig on stilts. Because the new page is a fucking disgrace!

The amount of projecting going on in some subreddits the past days is telling.

People are quite afraid that in fact the “leavers” won’t come back.

Many leavers indeed won’t come back. And it sounds like a lot of the leavers are mods and actives who were really relying on the better UX and functionality of outside apps and old Reddit etc. They won’t take being forced to a paid app or Reddits 's vision of UX and they probably will remember how the service treated them after all their essentially volunteer effort.

Tbf, there are a ton of comments that I think are genuine, not projection, about the API changes and blackouts, along the lines of “who cares” and “neckbeards!”. And those are the people who haven’t moderated a subreddit, weren’t there when old. was the default, and that I’m fine with leaving behind- the commenters who might as well be spambots.

The reality is that a LOT of reddit users are casuals who probably visit a couple of subs regularly using the official app or a web browser and are perfectly content with that. The issue, I think/hope, is that they aren’t the ones generating a lot of the content and discussion and they will lose interest in reddit when the big contributors have moved on.

I could be completely wrong and this may be a blip in the history of reddit, but I hope that it impacts them in a meaningful way. Reddit is 100% dependent on third parties generating content for them, so the leg they’re standing on is pretty fucking wobbly.

I agree. I never moderated a subreddit because I have seen what vitrol people spew at moderators.

I actually thought that moderators were getting compensated and I was extremely baffled when I heard they weren’t. I cannot understand why someone would take that role to just get piled on day by day.

The projection part is more focused on the people who scream (1 of my favorites); “What is gonna happen is that after 48 hours people come back, suck it up and install the new app”

I can understand the sentiment and alot of people will probably do that, that is a choice one makes.

I do think that the power users and/or people who contribute to the community are looking elsewhere at some point.

I also don’t have an illusion that Reddit implodes overnight and I will be suprised if people will leave en masse after 48 hours.

But I do know and that is a sentiment that I keep saying; Reddit will rail it’s userbase one way or the other. They already made it clear that they keep monetizing until they are profitable but companies always want more and more. So you are effectively getting railed eventually and continuously.

I originally intended to uninstall RIF and only use (old) Reddit (with RES) on my browser at the end of June, but these additional changes make it look like they’re desperate for money, and old.reddit won’t stay alive for much longer, anyway.

So I bit the bullet, got settled on Lemmy and Mastodon and really like it.

The very idea behind the fediverse is the “old school internet” I experienced back in the late 90’s, when people were still idealistic and thought the net would bring us freedom. What happened instead was the commercialisation of everything, algorithms to optimise engagement and attention, data collection and sales, the global spread of outrage peddling and fake news, and ultimately, the total sellout of twitter and Reddit. Late stage capitalism.

            I’m here to stay.

TBH this is nothing new. They already randomly restrict you from viewing any type of nsfw content on the mobile browser version. It prompts you to download the app with no option to close the prompt.
