It’s not matrix-based, but: Haven. It’s what I setup the… second? third? time discord had burned their users. The only thing missing for me is Xbox support, as several of my social circle are console gamers. But for pc users, it’s got everything I need.

1·3 months agoMaybe - I have two decades in tech but camera stuff is basically still new to me. I just know that the ootb system for reolink doesn’t play nice (or at all) with any systems that are foss/not reolink, so I had to toggle the setting for it to cooperate.

11·3 months agoIt’s been a bit but I do remember I wanted the bigger screen, the fingerprint and nfc readers are nice to integrate ‘eventually’, and I think it was only an extra like $75? Oh, and the secondary package cam, that was the main factor tbh.
I wanted to get the poe version + their chime, but I got vetoed since ‘we already have a mechanic chime’ and I don’t have PoE setup in the house. But my pitch for the pro model was successful and an easy sell.

6·3 months agoI bought a unit + 4tb surveillance drive, to replace a (what we thought was a) dying nest hardwired gen2 doorbell. I was excited - pulled it out of the box, ‘oh, it has an AC brick too! I can set it up and make sure it works before we install it’
Prepped the camera, prepped the nas to ingest the feed and drives, setup the non-proprietary stream (the acronym/letters escape me), all on the AC plug… And the feed, from the cam to the reolink app absolutely ground to a halt. I’m talking like, after 5 minutes of uptime, the feed was 60+ seconds behind. Absolutely wild. I restarted the app, phone, doorbell, no fix. I turned off the open-source (?) feed, going with only reolink’s proprietary stream. Better, but after 10 minutes it was still 30+ seconds behind. Reset the doorbell, set it up again, no change…
So either I got a defective/malfunctioning doorbell, a bad AC plug (but wouldn’t it just die if it was pulling too much power…?), the AC plug isn’t rated for anything more than very intital setup (I saw nothing about that in the instructions, and why would you do that…) or that is ‘working as intended’ which, why even bother if that is true.
B&H accepted both doorbell and drive, opened, no questions asked. Was very excited and it genuinely ruined my day. :(

12·3 months agoNot really. If I am posting something that I figure would generate discussion like this, I would have sources at the ready too. And though I am disabled now, I used to hash out 140+ wpm without errors, so this post would take maaaaaybe as much as 90 seconds, mostly formatting and a quick proofreading.
Not everything has to be ‘sus’, ‘dawg’.

15·3 months agoI ended up going with Unifi (G4 Pro Doorbell) after my test-run with Reolink went… poorly. It’s technically still ‘big tech’ but all the parts are on my property and my control, and (at least for the doorbell, that’s all I’ve got so far) it works nearly-perfectly with HA (I can’t get custom screen messages to stick when assigned through HA).

1·3 months agoFucks sake, when did that happen?
I swear that wasn’t the case, but I guess I’m wrong. Where do you go to ‘trade in’ the licenses?
My first used license ‘expired’ after a year, even though I’m 99% sure they are perpetual. So I’m on my second, waiting for that to expire too…

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How to get a phone notification if my VPS goes offline?English
1·5 months agoThis is what I use, though I run it on a local server that checks services that it runs (update breaks something, etc) and then also reaches out to the vps (and more) for status checks. Have it check services that are accessible by an access control rule, so the server is protected but you have updates on exactly what is having issues.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you capture things quickly across devices in a self-hosted setup?English
101·5 months agoI dunno if it would help, but between my phone and my computers (and one of my local servers) I use KDE Connect. Read about whatever I’m working on with the phone, share > kde > device, boom the clipboard is filled with whatever, or the link is automatically opened. Then proceed with the thing on my computer. Need to think or read about something but need to step away from the computer? Just copy it on the desktop, and again the clipboard is filled on the phone.
And of course sharing tabs on Firefox/derivatives.
It seems to me that having an asshole that contributes is a shitty situation, but each to their own.
(hehe poo joke but the point stands)

4·6 months agoMovies, TV, porn. That’s what I started with anyway…
20 up isn’t terrible; I made do with 10 for 8 years, and that included hosting said movies and shows to friends.

181·6 months agoSo you’re offering to manage my ~40 services, and make sure that all the dependencies are met - and none conflict…?
I mean, I enjoy hosting things myself, but I’m not going to invite issues that have been resolved by simple solutions. I’ve been around the block with dependency hell, fuck all of that. Now if I was getting paid like 6 figures instead of zero, sure boss, whatever the fuck you say boss, job security all day long. But unless you’re offering, I’m sticking with the easy way.
