Linux@lemmy.ml•Microsoft Releases Microsoft Defender For The Linux Desktop
2·1 day agoThis is really showing that Linux is on its way to be plagued by lots of corporate crap. What surprises me though is that the OS comunity has not come up with a FOSS solution that does what MS Defender does? I’m no programmer so i may be talking out of context. Why do i need to think that my out of the box Debian machine is more vulnerable than MicroSoft Windows.? Time to move to BSD?

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Self host a garden management softwareEnglish
1·6 days agobtw, thanks for those that made some good suggestions. I found farmOS and OpenFarm in the meantime which are not exactly for a garden. but my garden is big :-) almost 1 hectare … includes olive tree plantation (70), vegetable garden, dogs, chickens and and soon, when I retire, goats. so maybe not far from a little farm.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Have we been running insecure software since the arrival of AI?
6·6 days agoWhat really caught my attention was that in the update of today, the rsync package maintainer had to announce that he/she was jumping to version 3.5 because of “33 CVEs” … how can a software like rsync that has been around for so long have 33 CVEs shipped in just one update. I’m not a software developer but that sounds like a lot of CVEs?

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Finally have the stream from my HikVision, now the challenge of FrigateEnglish
1·1 month agoApparently is Shinobi CE (Community Edition) which is licensed under GPLv3 but no longer maintained and Shinobi Pro (current codebase) under a “Shinobi Open Source Software License Agreement”. From what I understand though the source code is still fully available and inspectable. The Shinobi licence simply puts restrictions on it’s use (i.e. they want to monetise for commercial deployment). Quite clearly they are competing with BI as you say. They must have a unique selling point I hope … It means that only Frigate is truly open source/free software.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Finally have the stream from my HikVision, now the challenge of FrigateEnglish
1·1 month agoOk, probably came across it at some point but just now was browsing the website, which appears to be more user friendly. It appears to have a docker option and a dedicate mobile app. Based on website features content seems to be quite mature. https://shinobi.video/features
There seems to be a commercial entity behind it. The licence seems to be ad hoc https://gitlab.com/Shinobi-Systems/Shinobi/-/blob/dev/LICENSE.md
Not sure this becomes closed/payment only at some point or whether it has closed source blobs.

1·1 month agoAh, yes, the small detail i was missing … BI is not open source. I had forgotten.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Any external NPU that can be hooked to a proxmox miniPC?English
1·1 month agoSeems like i’ve come late to the show then. I was about to get Frigate running on my optiplex micropc and was going to buy a Coral TPU. But if the are not sold anymore I may be stuffed with image recognition? My idea was proxmox->vm->frigate which seems to be the reccomended way of doing.

Thanks for sharing the link. Nice when people share their effort. Goid for getting ideas
