My grandmother ran Linux for a couple decades until her death at 101 years old. My 80+ year old mom has been running Linux for at least 2 decades. Yes, I’m tech support, but I don’t really have to do anything. It just works.
I recently read Kernighan’s UNIX: A History and Memoir. It was pretty interesting. Also, Bell Labs still hosts a page with a lot of links/info for Richie at: https://www.bell-labs.com/usr/dmr/www/

I’m sure you’ve seen it many times, but I love Bill Hick’s take on marketing.
Become comfortable with the command line. Learn the when and whys of using
sudo
. If you aren’t willing to do that, you may not want to stick with Linux. It can have a little bit of a learning curve in the beginning (nothing like what it used to be), but you should get more comfortable in a short time.

It’s been some time since I used it on an old laptop, but Puppy Linux was very responsive on shit hardware.
