Yes it is. Not sure why you got a downvote.

There’s a brilliant man who just gave a talk at Defcon who had previously given a talk at TED where he said we should ban all computers in school. 1 sec, I’ll get the link
Cliff Stoll! I highly recommend watching his Defcon talk as well. https://youtu.be/Gj8IA6xOpSk
Hell yeah. I somewhat recently bought a refurbished T490 and it’s one of my favorite computers I’ve ever owned.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Recommended mini pc for a homelab?English
6·3 months agoI’m a home-lab newbie but I built a NAS & Jellyfin server with a Raspberry Pi 5 and it works great. I got a SATA hat for it and it has 5x 8TB HDDs installed with ZFS RAIDZ1 in a custom 3D printed case. It can stream 4K on my network just fine. If there are other tasks you want your server to do or if you want to stream to multiple devices simultaneously I’m sure other people would recommend something more powerful but I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I picked up another Pi to set up tail scale (work in progress) and yet another Pi (open-box discount) to set up Immich (near-future project). I wouldn’t expect one Pi to handle all of those things simultaneously but I haven’t tried it.

For the time being I’m content with my little raspberry pi 5 running debian. I can stream 4K on my home network and that’s all the performance I need for now.

11·1 year agoPeople keep saying the Pi is CPU limited but it hasn’t gotten over 10% between all 4 cores while I’ve been transferring files. 16GB of RAM doesn’t seem very limited to me either. Thanks for the link!

3·1 year agoJust getting my feet wet. I have plenty of other uses for a Pi so if the NAS doesn’t work out that’s fine, I’ll get something else. Worst case I’m out $70-ish for the Raxda SATA hat. Something is seemingly not right with my config, I haven’t gotten the Pi to break a sweat yet. Thanks for your input though.

3·1 year agoI don’t know what ARC is and my searches so far haven’t helped. The CPU usage is pretty low, on htop is rarely passes 10%.
Edit: I asked chatGPT what it means, this seems like exactly the setting I was hoping to find. I’ll check it out and post an update.
Edit2: I changed the ARC size to 8GB and it definitely seems to have gotten slower.

I don’t disagree, tell that to Cliff.
