It’s just for a client, the current approach I’ve been trying on a pi 2B isn’t working well enough so a bit more power would be good. The 2B only has H264 hardware decoding but osmc+Kodi+jellyfin/jellycon doesn’t seem to allow transcoding and the 2B just doesn’t have enough power to play other formats.

Maybe another option is to run the dedicated JF desktop app in a GUI, because at least you can tell the server to transcoder to a suitable format that the pi can play. With the stick PC a full wipe and install of some lightweight Linux system would hopefully also work

Interesting, good to know that there are open source / privacy respecting (seemingly) options out there

I’ll give it a try. I think it suggests model 3B somewhere but can try it with a 2B

Ok, I’m going to try and wipe it and put a lightweight Linux system on it, it’s a lot cheaper than a 4B pi (although a 3B may be possible), will see how it goes

I tried using the pi 2B again, I’ve been using the GUI & browser to show jellyfin and the interface is so sluggish I think it would be hard to use regardless of the ability to play videos

Pretty sure I tested mine on video playback and it struggled (quite badly), but I didn’t check the playback format, maybe if you stick to the right codec then it works.

Do you know what number model it is? I tried using an old 2B but it was too slow and doesn’t have hardware decoding as far as I can tell. I’ve heard you need around 4B for media playback, but the price is not so great for a simple use like this. Stick PCs seemed to have some cheaper options, including hardware decoding, with the advantage of plugging straight into the HDMI port

Ok, I’ve been checking out some older ones for half the price (possibly used as well), the main requirement I’ve been checking is just hardware decoding, with a light weight Linux setup I think it should be sufficient.

The remote is worth considering, I might look into Bluetooth or RF based approaches as they are a bit more flexible than IR with positioning. Or even phone app based methods are possible

Yep offline backups are useful, although it does require remembering & making the effort to do it each time

Yes that seems like one way to go. Although I am using rsync so maybe keeping the files in place and changing owner could be an option

It’s for a home network, I managed to get it working using port forwarding through SSH thanks to suggestions. I’m not sure what the difference is with using the pi as an entry/exit node, that is what I was trying to do with the SSH forwarding. VPN is also possible but it it would also need to be set up to go through the pi
