I was referring to all the YouTube stuff recently from folks I normally trust. Now I’m starting to question it.

All of this Omarchy stuff seems very astroturfed.

I imagine most people that do this are already IT professionals. Or if they can do this they should be IT professionals. The difference between what I get paid to do and self-hosting is generally the scope and cost of the hardware. That’s about it.

To me this screams heat problem or bad power supply.

Why Apple hasn’t mad the iPad mini a CarPlay screen is beyond me. You can do it with an android tablet but not an iPad.
Yeah I totally missed that.
Well TIL … I subscribed to the first two but the last one didn’t work for some reason.
One think I miss from reddit… /r/datahoarder
These were my people. I probably have 100TB but it certainly isn’t in my home directory. I’m not sure if I should be immpressed or freightened.

Yeah I’d bet this. Had my keyboard set to GB something once and backspace and tilde were all messed up

I have seen the temporary->permanent happen so many times even in enterprise IT.

I’m not a windows hater per se, but I am for using the best tool for the job.
And in my opinion windows is not the best tool for self hosting. There are things windows does work well for that meshes well with self hosting and that’s docker. Honestly I’d focus on that for a lot of reasons but primarily because it’s a very easy to deploy self contained way to provide services. And the differences between docker on windows and Linux is almost negligible.
This probably doesn’t help you much right now but I have a QNAP as well. And I too despise the QTS software. But I found out that TrueNAS can run on it pretty easily. I have an NVME drive on a usb-c enclosure that I installed trueNAS on and it boots fine into it. If I ever wanna go back it’s just a remove the boot drive and reformat (the ZFS pools are compatible unfortunately).

Well in his defense, that language was sorta AI generated. Very glad the project isn’t. This looks like something I’m very interested in.

I’m 55 and I share the sentiment. The difference is I’ve been in IT for 30+ years and I still get giddy when I’m setting somewhere and can access my own servers that I run.

Isn’t that the good thing about a laptop … essentially built in UPS?

It’s all about time management. I have lots of requests from family/friends that I don’t want to have to do lots of work on. My stuff I want I tinker with. I’ll transcode and optimize and make sure the naming is what I want. Other stuff… don’t care. If it’s watchable it’s fine.

Same here. This is gonna bug me all day….

Yeah I don’t get it either… autocorrect?

Well my university just sells them. It’s all in person so there is a lottery to determine place in line because it’s popular. And for us it’s piece meal, not 900 iPads all at once. Might have to do some research to figure out where but I’d suspect most universities do this sorta stuff.
For example I’m in NC so there is this: https://www.doa.nc.gov/divisions/state-surplus-property/retail-store-locations
I’m assuming this is daisy chained. In a power strip there are not cables between the plugs that can be unplugged. Nor are there switches on each individual plug that can be accidentally flipped off. Any extra component is a failure mode. If it gets unplugged it loses power just the same as any failure. Now don’t get me wrong, I think this design is clean, expandable, and offers some neat features over a plain power strip, but to suggest there aren’t extra risks associated with this design is a bit short sighted.
