I’ve been on Arch or Arch based systems for 13+ years now. It used to be an incredibly annoying joke. I mostly saw it used to mock Arch users. But since Arch is more accepted now it seems to have morphed into a (mostly) funny meme. I never ever said it until this year though lol.
(I use Artix, btw)
It would be one thing to ban a fascist government, but he didn’t ban the Russian government, he banned a whole country of people who have no control over or choice in who the government is or what it does. And worse was that he spouted what amounted to racist sentiment as a defence.
More the people behind it than the distro, but CachyOS. Aside from the performance improvements only being marginal, I was happy with the convenience after a decade of using Vanilla Arch. It was the first distro ever to tempt me away in that decade. I was really, really disappointed by the response to the age verification bs. The mods did a terrible job with discussion on the forums and the devs never made a formal response. The upside is I learned more about Systemd and now happily using Artix. So at least some good came out of my disappointment.
Have you considered going DEless? Its been a while since I did but back then I was able to get a modern looking system with Openbox (amongst others but thats what I settled on). I dont know what the state of DEless windows managers are these days but I’ve seen some very nice looking setups. Might be something to consider?
MX on a laptop. It just works™. I have Artix (Dinit) on my PC. Also happy as a clam with that. My only regret is not switching sooner.
But those phones are mini computers, some of which people use as an actual desktop.
We have a now many years old Odroid that stills runs our media server, AdGuard Home, XMPP, and several other services.
It runs DietPi.
I used Arch for 10 years and in that time I could literally count on one hand how many times my system broke. Three of those times were user error. I was on CachyOS for about a year and a half and never once had issues. Now on Artix and I’ve once had my system get borked once (due to one package that was an easy downgrade). I’d hardly call 3 system borks in ~13 years “inevitable instability”. Rolling release =/= constant breakage. I wish this myth about Arch and Arch based distros would die.
I agree about Cachy’s improvements being meh. I noticed very little improvement (barely perceptible if at all) going from Arch to Cachy. I mostly stayed with it as long as I did for convenience.
It doesn’t. Yet. Hopefully it never will. But given how in on it Red Hat and the US govt is it could only be a matter of time.
As others have said, any distro with KDE Plasma. If you care about age verification then steer clear of Red Hat associated distros like Fedora. Mint is also straightforward.
The corporate ties to Microsoft, Meta, etc. The founder of systemd being ex Microsoft (including working on TPM). He also said that he thinks that people shouldn’t have a choice of init systems and that there should be only one - systemd.
He’s repeatedly made unpopular additions and changes to systemd, forcing them through, despite others protesting. Some of which has corporate capture stink.
That same founder pushing for age verification after having founded a company that specialises in “verifiable integrity”
Some of it you can read here: https://tboteproject.com/systemdfindings/
Other stuff is in the systemd (and probably redhat but I dont use that or Fedora) mailing list a over the years.
My one regret with recently ditching systemd is that I didn’t learn of the shady shit that’s been going on for years and ditch it sooner.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse Red Hat goes and outdoes itself again.

Imagine my confusion given it’s April 2nd where I am.
I’m really glad to hear that from Endeavour! I was on vanilla Arch for 10 years and been with CachyOS for the past year. But we have EndeavourOS on our kids computer and a laptop. I’ve been wary of Cachy now since how the mods have reacted to discussion about age verification And I would prefer to stick to something I know (although I’ll be keeping Artix in my back pocket just in case).
Used Arch for 10 years. Been trying CachyOS for the past year. Considering Artix if systemd continues down the age verification slippery slope. Haven’t tried it but NixOS looks interesting.
If I need to change the icons for accessibility reasons, does my anti-ableism cancel out my bigotry? 😅
“All the temporary shit will be saved on the hardcoded directory ~/.fuckyou and not /tmp”
.fuckyou 😂😂
A recent bugbear of mine has been hardcoded icons.
Learn basic desktop Linux? Mint. Learn how Linux works and really interested in more of the ins and outs? Arch (Artix if you want systemdless) Learn how Linux works in great depth and are very committed? Gentoo.
