GKH is to me the second most important guy in the Linux world today next to LT, and he definitely deserves more credit for his efforts maintaining the kernel. Maybe Greg doesn’t get as much press attention because he doesn’t make as profound statments as Linus tends to.

I wanted to consume the content instead of just being fed it.

Like you, this is the basis of a lot of my motivation to try and then stick with these FOSS programs, but perhaps differently than you, it also guides the extent to which I feel comfortable continuing to use some proprietary software and algorithms. Even for a poster sometimes it’s not obvious if there is any AI in the project. Example: Lutris, dev said they are adding Claude commits and will be scrubbing mentions of the tool from PRs. Sometimes AI is discussed but rejected.

It’s easy to tell when a whole project has been vibecoded, but the grey zone of an existing project that may or may not have had slopcode added, is tougher for posters to discern.

Right but essentially the Anthropic Marketing team made extraordinary claims about what Mythos is, pretended like it’s too dangerous for public use, that it can find and patch vulnerabilities undiscovered by human researchers for 20 years, etc. etc. but it’s own technical team and big firm partners haven’t brought forward evidence that it’s all that much. It’s probably not useless, and it might be an improvement in some ways to its other models, but having an “additional researcher” is not really something that is too scary for public use.

It’s like if a drug company was hyping up a miracle drug, but it’s really just acetaminophen and ibuprofen in a different dosage combination. It treats pain and fever fine enough, and maybe better in some cases but not as game changing as they say.

I’ll be honest, I don’t like the way AI is pushed and speculation ruining the price of computing, but it has helped me once or twice. For example I used someone’s vibecoded driver patch to get a relatively ancient audio interface working, which was the last thing that I would have missed using Windows for.

TIL it has purposely not been implemented by the main developers in over a decade for ideological reasons. There are scripts and forks to enable it by default.

Some file formats like mkv do work even if partially downloaded, so if you’re downloading a torrent for a free libre open source movie, choose the option to download chunks in sequential order, and I think there’s a way that you can watch while downloading.

It’s not any more sus than running any FOSS project binaries obtained from github. And OP wants to test a bunch of live environments, so that’s not really a security-critical environment.

I’d suggest it’s collective laziness over any even potentially malicious intent. The author listed about the 180 blobs they are aware of, the vast majority from FOSS projects.

Bazzite is great out of the box. My favourite part is that the menu automatically suggests flatpak apps you might want to install without getting in the way of your existing apps.

No matter the distro (since there’s plenty of good ones out there), help your friend set up Winboat and you’ll be all good.

I think much of the gatekeeping is over concern that if you mess up, you could unknowingly be allowing a sophisticated hacker to access all the data on your network, without any obvious signs. And maybe some people don’t want to field noob questions like “I clicked something and now the GUI gives a 😕 and doesn’t work anymore, what do I do?”.

There is a skill floor, I would say similarly that you wouldn’t be ready to install Linux yourself if you don’t get suspicious when a .iso download gives you a .exe file instead.

I think Yunohost is a decent solution for beginners that avoids as much of the nitty-gritty as possible. Louis Rossman has made a massive guide that’s about as close as an IKEA step-by-step as you can get with this stuff. We should be encouraging people to learn, but there is a sense of reticence to have people get too in over their heads due to cybersecurity reasons.

If we want to use the Nazi bar analogy, Cloudflare is like a company that bought up so many bars in town that some end up not vetting for Nazism well enough, letting it slip through, not necessarily playing favours towards or against fascism but they would technically be a ‘Nazi bar’ under the analogy’s definition. Cloudflare is so big that they probably don’t have controlling interest about the pet projects they kick some pennies towards.

I think this is a great unpopular opinion. TL:DR; In a similar sense to Lemmy/Fediverse vs. Reddit, the diversity of setups and software with some common elements is part of the point.

JBL sounds like your audio gear, depends on what. Bluetooth, USB audio ot 3.5mm jack connections generally work fine without issue. (Installing PulseAudio Volume Control will help you with finer grained volume control). Some DACs that require custom Windows drivers might not work.

Gaming stuff, Steam will have you covered, Lutris, Heroic, or itch.io for non-Steam stuff. The one unintuitive thing you have to do once you log in is to go to Steam Settings and check the “Use Steam Play for All Titles”. Just like that, 75% of your library that only have a Windows version will suddenly be playable and you’ll hardly notice a difference: just Download then click Play, that’s it (maybe a bit slower launch time).

I would recommend Firefox or Librewolf over Chrome as you have done already, but you should know that Chrome and Chromium do work on Linux FYI.

Holy moly that is a man page of a roast. Linus has gotten extremely good at making himself clear while maintaining his temper just enough.

His argument is applicable to much of FLOSS: your code and contributions you have say over, but you can’t complain about how people used your FLOSS code endpoints downstream. In exchange, any changes you make are the accessors’ responsibility to keep up with.

Each 12V circuit from the PSU should deliver around 150W and definitely not more than 240VA (over current protection kick in rating). One cord runs on that single circuit so it can’t deliver more than that much power. I experienced this when I foolishly thought I could reduce cable clutter building my friends’ PC, only to realize the 3080 ran terribly and was drawing about 150W, not unlike OP, except in my case it was clear this was the issue.

Other games too: if it’s a software issue, check Graphics Driver? For potential hardware issues, check if a GPU power cable is loose, reseat it, and make sure you don’t have two pcie power connectors from the same cable connected to both ports.

I remember using Reddit years ago on Links. New Reddit was borderline unusable, old Reddit worked… okayish. How is Default web UI Lemmy on Links? Is there a nice TUI client that I guess you would use more regularly?
