I have a pinephone for wifi and my SIM is in a CatB40 that only does calls/sms.
I use VMs instead. I understand those and can pretend the benefits matter.
Surely most basic is an old computer and double clicking minecraft_server.jar? Pretty sure that is the first server I ran for people outside of my LAN actually.
Ohh nice, I want it. Don’t really know what I would use all of it for, but I want it (but don’t want to pay for it).
Currently been thinking of getting an N150 mini PC. Setup proxmox and a few VMs. At the very least pihole, location to dump some backups and also got a web server for a few projects.

3·4 months agoJust installed it now and this is so much better than the SSH app I used before. Now dumping like 40GB of backup data onto the tablets SD card. Got the tablet second hand, think the SD card cost more than the tablet did.

2·4 months agoI would be sending files to the Android device, using it as a location to backup “important” data. Mostly Factorio saves.
Plugging in for that is impractical given its already on the same LAN.

10·4 months agoI don’t want an app to send files, I want to be able to rsync files to my phone like a normal computer.
I have data I want backed up so an rsync script sends it to a few different devices to keep multiple copies. I don’t want to manually drag/drop files for that, I just want my script to take care of it.

I kinda like flatpaks being an option, not sure when they are the only option though.
I would get a Nokia flip phone but they cost a bit. Cheaper to get something someone is throwing out

3·5 months agoI like using rygel currently, just run it by command line and media folders are available over the network. Any device with VLC can see it on the network and play.
I have been using rygel. I don’t need anything fancy, dump a few media folders onto any VLC player on the LAN.

3·5 months ago60w is like £120 a year, these costs add up to the point that low spec servers pretty much always cost more in energy than hardware. Of course it also depends on where you live and your energy rates.
You could buy a 20 year old server that is going to use 800w, or you could buy a mini PC that is probably more powerful and uses like 10-20w.
Then again, I used to live somewhere that energy was included in the rent so short of starting a bitcoin farm usage wouldn’t really get noticed too much. In that case it would make sense to just go cheap hardware.
Wouldn’t that laptop use so much more power that it costs you more in electricity though? At least that is usually the problem I hear with it, not sure what a good low spec option is currently once electricity prices are included. IIRC N150 is pretty good, not sure if there are other good/better options though.
