Well, the aluminum housings are overrated. My Redmi 4x housing deformed when the battery expanded (somewhat understandable), my dad’s laptop’s housing deformed from sitting on the table. And the Redmi’s housing is extremely scratched by just being in a case.

Yep, I have a 5290 (since 2023, 2018 model). If I had taken a minimum amount of care for it, it would still be in a great condition. But now, the housing is broken in multiple places and I have to replace the battery. But everything works great.
Just try a shitload of times. I did it on my redmi 4x. It was hell, but it’s done now.
My next phone probably won’t even have it.
Also: on newer xiaomis, it’s also practically not doable. It’s just the pixels and maybe EU onepluses.

Buy a different thinkpad (an older gen T/L/E 14) (but check the upgradability), there is too much demand for it for it to be normally priced.
I wanted one in ~2023 and couldn’t find one under 300€, I then bought a Dell Latitude 5290 with the same CPU (i5-8350u) as the T480. The Latitude is working well enough, Dells (Latitudes and Precisions) are also a great thinkpad alternative - keep in mind they don’t have a trackpoint (since 2018).

Dell is good for Linux (especially Latitudes and Precision models). They’re also relatively reliable and build quality is great (if you ignore the stupid XPS-s).
For laptops, you have https://linux-hardware.org/. It’s also better to avoid MTK network cards(many are still fine). Otherwise, I think linux support is good for mostly all hardware.
Lenovo’s ThinkPads are still as good as any other models.
