Yeah, email is one of the more annoying things to self host. Google rejects mine because my ISP has all their non static IPs on block lists (even though my IP hasn’t changed once since I’ve been with them it’s still not “static”, can’t change the reverse DNS) and I’m not paying 150% more a month for a business account to get a static IP. I ended up just using a free email relay. Still had to setup SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and all that jazz still.

Uptime Kuma for outages, Prometheus for metrics, rsyslog to Loki backend for logs. Grafana for ingesting Prometheus and Loki data.

Maybe one day I’ll get time to test Proxmox alternatives but I have a lot of playbooks I’d need to migrate if I went with something else.

Could always use LXCs they’re lighter weight than a VM but they’re IMHO more complicated to get started with than Docker / Podman as there isn’t as big an ecosystem, unless you run a hypervisor that supports them. If you run a hypervisor then Proxmox and I think OpenStack are they only two I know that support them natively.

Yeah that’s going to depend a lot on the images you’re running. If it’s a published one the likely it’ll have a compose or at least a one liner to get it running. But yeah there can always be issues with hard coded IDs and if you want to give the host folders 777 or limit them. Are you running selinux and that’s going to get in the way. Did they not mention capabilities that needed to be added?

And if you’re building your own or extending that a whole other ball of wax.

And I typically run on k8s so that adds a whole other layer of complexity. But I’ve been using it for years and I’m actually more comfortable with it than just docker or podman.

Yeah, this is self hosting after all. If you don’t expect some challenges to work though then you’re not gonna not have a good time.

Even if properly setup it could still go to spam until you get your reputation score up which with low volumes will take ages.

I don’t think seer, sonarr, or radarr support that but in theory could. You’d also need your sources to have a good way to supply those details in a good way as well. I wish they had a good way to filter for languages now as I hate dubbed anything.

Yeah, I have like a half dozen MC containers sitting idle and the kids have access in Proxmox to start and stop them if they want to play. They play bedrock on their Switches but that’s the only place they play it.

I have a feeling Microsoft has been itching to shut down the Java edition since they acquired it. They just know how much publicly comes from content based on the Java edition.

Love how they consider this piracy now, when for a long long time corporate hosting of multiplayer servers wasn’t even a thing that existed. You either self hosted or paid a hosting service.

I should really make a dd image of my card for the Pi I use for all my switch serial connections.

My WAN connection would just randomly start losing packets and would not recover, not full disconnect just lots of retries. Didn’t impact LAN just WAN. Unplugged the cable or disabling then re-enabling the interface would fix it for a coupe of days to a week then it would come back.

Time consuming to diagnose as switching cables, ports, etc would require waiting days to see if it fixed it.

Eventually had the ISP come out and swap the fiber media converter and fiber integrity. But again it came back.

After several weeks I stumbled on a FreeBDS bug that was exactly my issue…I was running OpnSense and my gateway had I225s. Applied the scripts and it worked.

If this is for internal only you can setup OpnSense to do DNS records either through static IPs or add hostnames to the DNS records via DHCP. If you want this externally that’s a whole other ball of wax.

Neither require you to purchase a domain name. Just use whatever you want .internal While you can use other things like .lan, .internal is the only one that is actually reserved for LAN use.

*I’m pretty sure you can add firewall rules in OpnSense as well to redirect from port 80 or 443 to whatever port you’re actually using but that may cause more problems than it’s worth. If you can’t change the port in the app itself then, honestly just bookmark it with the actual port so you don’t have to remember it.

More and more are dropping s3. My Thinkpad doesn’t have it and I think some framework might be s2idle only.

My Thinkpad only supports s2idle (checked the bios no way to turn on s3). It truly sucks, the laptop won’t go 8 hours on idle without the battery dying. I used the amd-s2idle tester and it said the laptop was going to idle after 10 minutes but that was not reflected in real world use. Even after turning off every wakeup except the power button to prevent premature wakeup from wifi USB etc.

My only solution was to re-enabling hibernate. It’s slower and takes disk space but it works. Laptop can go days on hibernate with no issue.

I do get blocked by engines occasionally which can have a drastic impact on results.

Networking isn’t my forte but I thought IP addressing required layer 3 switching? Which is going to be dependent on your switch supporting it.
