Why is it hard? It used to be real easy to run in a VM. I am running windows 11 in docker and it was easy, maybe consider that?

4·7 months agoSo assuming you are traveling, what do you bring with you if it isn’t a mobile streaming device, a laptop, or a mobile device that you are going to stream to?

4·7 months ago“install this app on your tv and log in”, which is exactly what Plex does
Yes, but that person has to create an account. Everyone has to create an account. With Plex. Some people I know immediately say no, others are annoyed that plex would try and shake them down for money.
If you configure Jellyfin, all that goes away. THEN they can simply download the app and login.

2·7 months agoI got concerned when people started buying Plex hats. And being excited about that purchase.
I noticed that Logo on Hats people who are willing to pay for them is often a bit concerning.
Fuck Microsoft. We tried to get a open standard and so they created a competing name and standard to confuse and obfuscate (and wasn’t really a standard anyone could create).
So they can go get bent.

1·8 months agoI run them side by side too. I also have plexpass from ahes ago.
But I actually like the jellyfin ui better. It’s simple, to the point and most importantly fast. Sit. Down click jellyfin click show, go.
Plex just feels laggy and sloppy in comparison.
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
I really like Kate! Been my text editor for what 20 years now?
Isn’t unraid based on slackware?
Redhat.
Stuck with redhat on the server, had another server with Gentoo, and then Mepis and Debian for desktop.
Now days its arch and fedora.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which areas of Linux would benefit most from further standardization?English
3·9 months agoYou blocked me over a difference of opinion?
Wow.
All I am trying to say it that it is a tool in the toolbox. Telling people Linux needs it is not true, telling people it’s bad is not true.
Quit trying to make it a negative. I would encourage anyone to explore how to use this tool. And when trying to communicate ideas on the internet it is a very useful one.
I have never blocked anyone, I find that so strange. It’s like saying because of our difference on this issue, we could never have common ground on any other.
And you ask me to remember my humanity?

41·9 months agolose sight of their humanity
Ok this is now a stupid conversation. Really? Humanity?
Look, you can either follow a flowchart of a dozen different things to click on to get information about your thunderbolt device or type
boltctl -listDo you want me to create screen shots of every step of the way to use a gui or just type 12 characters? That is why it is useful. It is easy to explain, easy to ask someone to do it. Then they can copy and paste a response, instead of yet another screenshot.
Next thing you know you will be telling me it is against humanity to “right click”. Or maybe we all should just get a Mac Book Wheel
Look, I am only advocating that it is a very useful tool. There is nothing “bad” about it, or even hard. What is the negative?
But I also said, I have been using a Fedora laptop for over a year and guess what? I never needed the command line. Not once.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which areas of Linux would benefit most from further standardization?English
93·9 months agoWhy do people keep saying this? If you don’t want to use the command line then don’t.
But there is no good reason to say people shouldn’t. It’s always the best way to get across what needs to be done and have the person execute it.
The fedora laptop I have been using for the past year has never needed the command line.
On my desktop I use arch. I use the command line because I know it and it makes sense.
Its sad people see it as a negative when it is really useful. But as of today you can get by without it.

Linux@lemmy.ml•If you have to pick only one Desktop Environment and use it till your computer breaks, what would you choose?English
41·9 months agoLol, yep. It’s always funny to see xfce as being light weight.
Is this where I continue the meme and say I use arch by the way?
On the other hand KDE discover… Yikes. The software manager uses as much memory as XFCE.

Linux@lemmy.ml•If you have to pick only one Desktop Environment and use it till your computer breaks, what would you choose?English
53·9 months agoThe surprising thing is that KDE would run on there just fine too. If you don’t add all the PIM stuff, it’s almost a wash in memory usage and just as snappy.
